By the time I hit the ending of Carrion Comfort I was completely satisfied where we ended up. The King novels in particular just left a weird taste in your mouth when you were done. I will say however that the ending left me more satisfied than I felt at the end of the 3 other aforementioned horror epics. I can't give it a perfect score though since while there is gold in these hills you still have to work to get it.

Which is what I look for most in a horror novel. There are a lot of actually scary scenes and a lot more that will unsettle and creep you out. So much of their ability feels rapey and in quite a few instances is literally rapey so be prepared if that sort of thing doesn't work for you, it's only a few moments though here and there in this giant novel. It won the Bram Stoker Award, the Locus Poll Award for Best Horror Novel, and the August Derleth Award for Best Novel. You get many chapters from the villains perspective and those are creepy and unsettling. Carrion Comfort is a science fiction/horror novel by American writer Dan Simmons, published in 1989 in hard cover by Dark Harvest and in 1990 in paperback by Warner Books. The characters through out the novel are fantastic and for the most part a lot of fun to read about. So kinda vampire-ish but not really to me. Some of them refer to this as feeding but really it never came across as something that they needed to do to survive. They come across more as regular people, well sociopaths, who have the ability to mind control the general populous. The villains in this tale aren't your traditional vampires.

Probably the last of the great horror epics I had on my TBR List after The Stand, It, and Swan Song by Robert McCammon.Ĭarrion Comfort is touted as one of the greatest vampire novel's of all time and I still can't get my head around that. The performance is really well done.Ĥ.5/5 Well it took me about a month but I have finally finished this monster of a 1,000 page novel. I listened to the Audible Presentation which runs 39.5 hours unabridged.
